He didn't "get off with a $5000 fine".  The law states that the maximum penalty for each charge of supplying alcoholic beverages is $2500 per teenager.  Apparently[b] the state could only prove two charges [/b]since nearly the entire group of party goers retained attorneys and wouldn't talk to the police.  [/quote]

Well, there was one drunk driver and two dead kids in the car as well as another underage passenger who had minor injuries.  So that's at least 4 teenagers that the police knew about and were at the scene.[/quote]

Everyone knows they drank at the house. It would not be abuse of power to charge the adult with more than a slap on wrist. It would send a message. There are two dead kids as a direct result of drinking at this parent's house. [/quote]
