"It seems that smaller teams benefit everyone. Maybe there aren't enough strong players or skilled coaches in this region for that to happen?" I think more the latter. Especially with clubs that play at the higher end (and therefore a brand name/rep to protect), finding and retaining commensurate level coaches is going to be tough (if you keep their compensation at the same levels as I imagine they are today). Couple that with high overhead for facilities in NoVA especially, and I think the availability of sufficient caliber coaches (and asst coaches to groom) becomes the limiting factor.
Agreed on the coaches being a factor. I think another cause is that the DMV area is a little late on the volleyball bandwagon. Metro Travel (and Paramount to a lesser extent) are the only clubs with a consistent track record of helping players go on to play D1 volleyball. Additionally, these are the only CHRVA clubs that are able to be competitive in the open division at qualifiers and bigger tournaments. I know there are other clubs with good teams that can compete for an open bids and players that go to D1 programs, but Metro is the only local club having most 18 Travel players go D1 year after year and as a club usually get multiple open bids for USAV nationals every year. If your DD is a high potential player it’s understandable why you might be willing to settle for being the 13th-15th player battling for playing time on a Metro or Paramount team. Hopefully other clubs can improve and grow so that these players are willing to go be a starter at another club and still be confident they are getting good coaching and recruiting support.
