Am I delusional, or does Ruin The Friendship sound just like the opening of When We Are Together by The 1975 and It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over by Lenny Kravitz?! Did she choose that deliberately?
That song is so out of place on the album. One theory is she is saying she doesnt regret ruining her friendship with mattt by dating. I dont know if I buy it. Did they have a friendship or a ten year fliration? Maybe she just needed a 12th song for her 12th album?
Oh for God’s sake. That song is about her good friend from HS who died and how she wished she had “ruined the friendship” by seeing if it could have been more. The boy’s mother even commented on it. It has nothing to do with MH and some of you need to move on, already. https://people.com/mom-of-late-taylor-swift-friend-jeff-lang-breaks-silence-on-ruin-the-friendship-shes-keeping-his-name-alive-11830773
Yea duh. Everyone knows that. Why is it on this album with musical references to 1975 songs? Art has multiple meanings. I dont actually think she is talking anout mh here, but that is one theoey out there - that one layer/meaning of this song is after it all she doesnt regret going for it because she answered the question (remember her song question is about mh).
Exactly. Taylor is famous for using double meanings, red herrings and mixing up/making up events in her songs so that it won’t be obvious who she is talking about. Only a handful of her closest people who know the details of certain muses and events can decode the clues she leaves. “You taught me a secret language I can’t speak with anyone else.” She has done it her entire career except on TTPD, where she was obvious and didn’t give a damn. I know Ruin The Friendship is allegedly about a HS crush who died, I just don’t buy that she is reminiscing about him 15+ years after his funeral and 20 years after she didn’t kiss him at a dance. At the end she sings “And my advice is always answer the question, better that than to ask it all your life.” It relates directly to her song Question ? on Midnights, which is supposed to be for Matty. Also repeating “Should’ve kissed you anyway” multiple times sounds just like “She has a boyfriend anyway.” That, plus the music similarities.
