I see a lot of immigration issues as a matter of consistently applying the law. If the argument is that we should ignore the law and the decision of judges when the person has a sympathetic background then how much weight does law really carry? Who is to say what is sympathetic and what isn't? It's completely subjective. This is the fallacy in saying things like 'she worked at Target, she was a grandma, he came here when he was a baby, etc.'  to gain sympathy. And frankly this inconsistent application of law is what emboldens people to subject themselves to horrors travelling here. If they truly just wanted to flee their countries for safety, they would stop and apply for asylum in any number of countries they pass through on the way here. [/quote]
