Oxbridge admissions are for sure not a meritocracy. A set of eight schools get more admissions than the rest of the state schools combined, and six of those eight schools are Eton, Westminster, St. Paul's, KCS, Magdalen College School, and St. Paul's Girls. Those schools are in turn fed by ludicrously expensive and competitive London prep schools like Westminster Under that posh people hire elite tutors to get their kids past the entrance exams, or country boarding preps in Berkshire, Hertfordshire, etc. full of old money. Jack Q. Pifflewiffle from a mediocre sixth form college in Shropshire can forget about it. It's the same problems all over the world. None of this surprises me, more just how bad and stupid they were at it. How gauche.
I agree about Oxbridge and made a similar point earlier. The percentage of students from select private schools is much higher than at HYPSM.
