This deal is not done, so DC has some hope. Lets pressure the Mayor and DC Council to move aggressively and quickly. Both are important.
The ball (and puck) are in Virginia’s hands now. Also, what are the District residents willing to give up to keep the teams, especially with a very bleak economic outlook? Frankly, I feel Leonsis is done with DC and if the VA deal fails to materialize he will start shopping the teams around. Vegas and Seattle would be willing to pay big bucks for an NBA team and I’ve read Atlanta is interested in yes, another NHL franchise.
Yes and it’s well known that Montreal desperately wants an NBA team, and also its Expos back. It’s not improbable that DC could be left without any pro sports teams at all.
The Nats are probably fine (although Nashville comes up every so often as a possible relocation site). The Commanders will most likely stay in Maryland or go to Northern Virginia as I don’t think most DC residents want the NFL to play at a potential RFK 2. United and the Spirit definitely will stay; the Mystics (most likely) will stay. NBA-G league team will stay. If the Caps do leave, I’m sure an AHL franchise can be found.
