Frankly I think Courtney the neighbor is just jealous. She could move, but she can't afford to.
The value of her house has risen dramatically since rm she purchased it. She would have no problem selling and buying elsewhere.
“Mike’s” home value has risen even more dramatically since they purchased in 2010. He’s owned longer than the Leonards. He’s the one with the issue of squeezing so many family members into one single family home.
?? Yes, that's why he wanted the addition.
Or he could have sold and used his proceeds to buy a home big enough to house his large extended family. Everyone would be happier and his new house would fit in with his new neighborhood instead of what he’s doing now.
He could have, but he had a legal path that should have allowed him to stay in his home. If you don't want your neighbors to be able to do make changes to their homes that are consistent with zoning requirements, then you (and Courtney) should move to a neighborhood with an HOA. Otherwise, there's no path to forcing other homeowners into an HOA after-the-fact.
