Of course the implication is that the dad died - seems unlikely that she'd still wear the necklace if the parents got divorced.  And it is only two episodes in - how can you say it is slow?! If everything was explained by now, it would be a one season show :-).

They don't need a big plot twist in every episode...they just need viewers to think there MIGHT be one.  Shows like Parenthood (This is Us' replacement series) never had many plot twists.  The twists are just to get initial interest...then the characters and day-to-day storylines will keep it going.  Just like any other drama series. [/quote]
