OP here. "cheap" to me would be $1K-3K.

I was ideally looking in the 5k-8k range.

You'll go blissfully along your merry way because your guy spent $5,000 on a ring (sorry, $5,000 to $8,000), but "oh well" if it's $1,000? Man, if I were your guy I'd run for the hills.
