Vet here.  He flew aircraft on combat missions and was shot down. He kept his faith while confined and tortured.  He is a hero.[/quote]

Yes, he did those things but as a PP pointed out it doesn't make him a hero. It was all in the course of duty and happens over and over.

Staying behind with those who were also captive instead of leaving when offered the chance - again not heroic but definitely moral and the right thing to do. And really being a good person and doing the right thing even under duress - far, far more important in life than getting a label of "war hero"[/quote]

Hundreds of thousands of vets never did anything more dangerous than turn wrenches in a motor pool, or be a desk jockey logistics officer, et cetera.  That is "ordinary course of duty."     They never faced enemy fire, let alone being tortured by the enemy and still staying loyal to fellow soldiers and not leaving anyone behind.  What McCain did and went through is extraordinary.  When you've experienced the same you will be qualified to talk.  Until then, your opinions are pretty meaningless.[/quote]
