It has a lot to do with choices of high schools for parents. It's one thing for the top AA students at Banneker or Eastern to score in the 600s on SATs, which most seem to do, another thing altogether for my Asian children (with a distinctively Asian surname). No reason for them to apply to elite college without 700s - they'll surely be rejected out of hand. If a DCPS HS doesn't have a track record of delivering high SAT scores, much better for us to look at BASIS, privates or the burbs.
If your Asain kid can garner high SAT scores at Basis, private, the burbs, your Asian kid can score them at Banneker. BTW, it was a Asian girl from Banneker who earned a Gates scholarship last year. It appears that not all Asians have bought in to the white is greater mentality and we must flock to them to exceed.
The two 2014 Gates scholars from Banneker were black males. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/dcs-banneker-high-produces-two-gates-millenium-scholars/2014/06/16/c67fb140-f583-11e3-a3a5-42be35962a52_story.html There were also students from SWW and Thurgood Marshall Academy, but neither appeared to be an Asian female. Two 2015 Gates scholars from DC were also male, one from Ethiopia and one from El Salvador. Both attended CHEC: http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/dc-friends-win-gates-scholarships-will-have-college-costs-covered/2015/04/30/bbbbf8a2-ef58-11e4-8abc-d6aa3bad79dd_story.html and there were also 2015 winners from Coolidge, Woodson, Thurgood Marshall, Ellington, E.L. Haynes (based on solely on name, this person appears to be Asian). I do agree that a kid who would score a 700 at Wilson would also do it at Eastern, and might have an interesting story to tell. Kid would have to be driven, and parents might have to work hard to help their kid obtain certain opportunities (science research) and if the school doesn't participate in certain team events like It's Academic or Model UN than those wouldn't be options. But there's enough to do at Eastern--and in the DC metro area--that a very focused kid with very supportive parents could do very well in college admissions after attending Eastern.
