I got an earful the other day from some current parents really not happy with the school head. I had no idea it had changed so much. Lots of people pulling their kids to go to Mater Dei, Norwood or other schools. Some parents just waiting it out since they only have a year or two left. It seems like it is really polarized there, some parents i guess must like the new head, but lots just biding time. Shame, shouldn't be like that.
While we haven't been there in a few years, it is hard to belive that lots of people are pulling their kids for Mater Dei. In the years we were there, 1 kid left for Mater Dei. MD starts in 1st and most of the kids seem to come from catholic schools. As far as for other schools, unless you are applying out after Pre'K, the chances of lots of people finding spaces for 1st or 2nd grade are pretty low. Most schools just don't have a lot of open spots till 3rd.
FYI - this is not true for Norwood. They expand between K and 1st from 2 classes to 3 classes, so applying in for 1st grade is definitely an option.
http://www.norwoodschool.org/admissions/application_process/index.aspx From their website: Kindergarten: 32 1st Grade: 10-12 Second Grade: 3-5 Third Grade: 5-10 Fourth Grade: 3-5 Fifth Grade: 3-5 Sixth Grade: 5-8 Seventh Grade: 3-5 Eighth Grade: 0 10-12 spots is not a high number for "lots of kids" to leave and go to Norwood.
10-12 is actually a large number "new spots" for 1st grade admission compared to other privates in the area. Believe me, I know. We applied for privates for 1st grade and this was 2x larger (or more) than spots available at other schools for 1st. The original point was that there ARE actually spots open at Norwood to apply for first - it's not just attrition but an expansion of the grade. Which is counter to what the PP had posted by saying there were limited spots to apply at these schools for 1st.
