I am not currently working for a Direct Sales Company, and my husband and I are business owners in another industry. I am ready this blog because I am considering starting a Direct Sales Company. It sound like so many folks have had bad experiences or know someone else who has. That is unfortunate. I can offer the flip side of the coin ... when I was five, (now over 40) my mom signed up for a "party plan" company, simply to earn an all-expense paid vacation to London. She earned that trip, and my entire life, my two siblings, my dad and my mom were able to travel to Hawaii five times, Paris, Caribbean Cruises, Italy, and on and on ... all while traveling the world globally - for free -- she always earned a six figure income .. still does to this day. She has seen many people esp. women, benefit from their efforts of selling a product and recruiting anyone at shows that would like to join her. No pressure really - what is funny as I read the comments is that most people say how these companies require reps to hound friends and family-- that is usually where one starts their businesses - with their "warm" market. BUT, with in a week or two, a GOOD rep should be well into groups of people with whom they have never met. That is the beauty of the business. Leads me to believe the failure rates listed here are from people who failed to get past their inner circle. That is also why they lost money. I know people today, that have tried some of the companies and not liked the concept for themselves personally, but, I also have personal experience with people who have built thriving businesses and have never had to miss a child's baseball game or ballet recital, because they have FREEDOM of working their own schedules. Lastly, I can tell you that usually such companies have a built in Hostess program whereby IF a person cannot afford to buy all the items they love, they can host a show and EARN the products for free. I know many people who were not financially able to buy all the things on their list, or Christmas gifts, etc. Earning products for free enabled them to gift to loved ones, they otherwise would not have been able to. There is a GLASS HALF FULL approach to this and anything ... if one is looking for it!
Cool story, bro. Statistics disagree with you. These companies often tout "you can make what you want to make!" but that just isn't how the cookie crumbles. You make a penance compared to a traditional job, and thinking you'll do otherwise is misleading for those in 99% of these roles. But it does sound like it worked for your mom...who got in on it early and surely has a down-line to envy; she's making money off those who join tomorrow.
