You can tell just how bad the math is in DCPS by reading the Deal thread on Algebra and Geometry. Kids have to double up in math and families are advising against it because there is no math offered after Cal. WTF.
Shall we evaluate the schools you graduated from based on your reading comprehension? C- In that thread the poster is asking if their child should double up on Geometry and Algebra II in 8th, which is an option Deal offers to students they think could handle Algebra II in 8th. What they are being told is that at J-R, there aren't good options for taking post-calc math in 11th because the way kids take post-calc at JR is through dual enrollment at a local university (so an actual college level math class) and 11th is a bad year to do this due to scheduling and other demands. So they can just take Algebra II freshman year, and that is puts them on track to do post-calc math at a local university their senior year if they want. There is no compelling reason to do this in 11th, even for mathy kids who intend to major in STEM in college. Colleges will also be more impressed by an actual college level math class than a HS class, no matter what it's called.
