My kid was lucky to be going to one of his top choices of college (UT Austin). He’s a normal high stats kid with decent ECs, so we’re realistic about his chance for the T30. While his pipe dream school is my alma mater, UT Austin is his realistic dream school. We also like the area a lot. Unfortunately last week a classmate of his (they’re friends for some time, but have sort of drifted apart) gave him a lecture on why he would choose a college in Texas and went on to insult all Texans. I was like, WTF?! How to deal with crazy people like that?
I think you wake up and realize that Texans vote for white supremacists who want to control women and enjoy cruelty against minorities. Yes it’s a generalization but it’s based on reality. Not all Texans are the low IQ racists we fear but enough of them are that many of us discourage our kids from going to college there. That does not mean that Texas doesn’t have good academic programs but the people of Texas don’t generally come across as well informed and educated so the reputation of their academic institutions will reflect that. White males can go and not worry too much. Everyone else is in danger and probably won’t choose Texas as their first choice.
