I am not changing my instructional plan because some kids choose to walk out. For whatever reason. I’ve had kids protest for 2A rights and I kept teaching, and I’ve had kids protest ICE and I kept teaching. Their political action is theirs and since I’m not supposed to engage in politics at school, I am just continuing with my plans regardless. If they miss something, I actually do want them to take that in and think about it, because if you had nothing at all to lose, you didn’t take a stand against anything, you just took a break.
I as a parent agree with this. We live in the DC metro area. You can always find a protest to join on a weekend. No need to disrupt the learning of other students or give over-burdened teachers more work. And what is it really for? Have you ever watched the videos the high schools post on YouTube interviewing students at the protest? They have no idea what they are doing and cannot clearly articulate their views at all. If you are going to protest, you need to truly understand the cause and not just be sheep.
