I was a huge nerd in high school, straight-A valedictorian type who had never gone to a party with alcohol by the time I finished high school. If you asked me at the time, I would 100% have picked a serious academic environment over a party school every time. But I chose my state’s flagship because it was cheap, and I accidentally joined a sport (long story), and suddenly my college years were a series of games and keggers. I was having so much fun that there wasn’t much time to study, but the student union sold notes for the big classes — which was almost all of my classes — as a “study aid” and I bought them as a complete replacement for going to class. Even though that’s not the college experience I would have chosen for myself, it was definitely the college experience I needed to loosen up a little and know how to operate socially. And a couple of years of fun in a lifetime of hard work shouldn’t have to derail someone’s path. But I definitely get what a few PPs said about needing academics to set up a future path. I got a near-perfect score on my LSAT, so that and the non-standard geography and resume meant I had my choice of law schools even with a lackluster college resume. One other warning to the party plan if you have a daughter. Be sure to talk to all your daughters (and your sons!) about the high rates of sexual abuse on college campuses, particularly against freshmen girls, and particularly when there’s alcohol involved. Having fun in college has higher stakes for girls than boys — it’s unfortunate and unjust but it’s also a fact that kids need to be prepared for.
