How come no one is taking the Oakton Middle School idea seriously?
This has been explained ad nauseum. 1. There is not a need for another middle school. There is capacity availability in existing middle schools. 2. Despite the feelings of the RIO crowd, Oakton-bound students are not any more special than any other students in FCPS. That seems to be a difficult concept for the RIO group in particular.
Why would RIO want a new middle school? They might be moving in a few months and that school won’t help their case as it wouldn’t be built for years. This was pitched by a mom in the now deleted Oakton MS thread from Waples Mill. Regardless, most people in the pyramid are happy with their current MS, no one wants to drive further.
RIO does not want a new middle school. They want their kids to go to Franklin with the other Oakton-bound kids from Navy and Waples. If they keep Crossfield at Oakton, that does make sense. I've heard from multiple friends that their kids hated being torn apart from their Carson friends - they ALL went to different high schools. Personally I prefer Crossfield to stay at Carson and go to Western. I would be really disappointed if my younger kids don't get to Carson.
Why would you be disappointed if your younger kids don't go to Carson? Having sent some of my own kids to both Carson and Franklin, I can tell you there is nothing special about Carson over Franklin. They are both good schools and they teach the same curriculum. They are both split feeders and are approximately the same distance from every neighborhood they serve since they are only a mile apart from each other.
