I was recently watching a CPS case on YouTube and the family was living off grid with a solar powered shower. There were other issues (lack of appropriate supervision as the child care provider had mental health issues while mom worked) but the girl who was 8 told the CPS worker she showered every 2-3 days. Amid all the other details, I thought it was interesting that the CPS worker focused on this and kept telling the mother that it is neglect to not shower the kids every day. She focused on the not showering daily a few times. The kids played outside often but were well fed and loved and mom was in a situation where she needed to work to pay the bills and only had a caregiver with mental health issues to watch the kids who were 6 and 8. The home was clean but the biggest issue for the CPS worker was that the kids were going to bed dirty if they were playing outside and not being showered daily. She also mentioned the clothes they had on weren’t freshly laundered and that kids should be in clean clothes every day. As someone who also grew up in a dusty rural area, our clothes looked a lot worse than the clothes these kids were wearing when we spent our days outside playing.
