I'm a Democrat. However I said on day 1 of the shutdown Schumer went into this against an administration that breaks the law and he probably had no plan for an off ramp. He is not going to get what he wants for all the pain it is causing. That's the sad truth. You can't win a staring contest against people who want to destroy the government. It's time to vote to open the government.
COURTS have orderd the administration to pay SNAP and they are refuseng to do it. It has nothing tp do with the shut down. SNAP benefits were never cut off in a shut down before. Until this one.
Where exactly should the $8 billion come from?
The general fund is up and running. Tax money is still rolling in. There is not legislation that specifically sets aside money for SNAP. There is no legal reason to withhold the funds. Everything from this admin is lies.
That isn’t how it works. Just because taxes are being collected doesn’t mean the money can be spent at the executive’s discretion. The money must be appropriated by Congress. Otherwise there is nothing to stop the executive from spending money on whatever they feel is a priority. (Something you likely wouldn’t end up supporting.)
And then there's Trump, who just does whatever he wants because nobody stops him. He could pay SNAP if he wanted. But we all know what kind of guy he really is.
+1. Republicans need to ask themselves how/why Trump was able to send $40 billion in American tax dollars in a failed attempt to prop up the currency in Argentina for his buddies there yet hasn’t prioritized paying poor Americans their food stamps.
I want red state voters voters to ask themselves this question. Red state users of SNAP should think long and hard about this. Imagine going to the SCOTUS to refuse to feed hungry Americans while giving $40 billion to another country that has universal healthcare. I want American cattle farmers to reflect on why he would prefer to import Argentinian beef that his own administration has said is infected with foot and mouth disease. American soy bean farmers reflect on that deal that their Argentinian counterparts just cut with China.
Based on the recent election shifts, I think that a lot of them are asking themselves that question (and others like it). However, we might be almost down to the masochist core of maga voters that can’t be swayed no matter how hard he steps on their necks.
Listening to red state voters call into Washington Journal on CSPAN yesterday, I'm not so sure. Anecdotally they are hanging on tight and praying while their EBT cards remain empty.
