We signed DS up for tryouts on the recommendation of our club (and prior to seeing any of these threads) and because it sounded like a nice opportunity for good-quality, supplemental training—nothing more. Several others from his team also tried out but not all were selected. Will report back later on our experience. Sessions set to start this weekend.
Thanks for the honest post here. What age and team level is your player (1st, 2nd 3rd ect...)? I think your approach is the right one, it's a good opportunity to get some good extra training, most likely technical training that they are not getting at their current team. Thanks, good luck and hope his skills level up!
Thank you! He’s a 2014 and his team is in NCSL Division One. Absolutely zero delusions that he would play professionally. We observed a pretty broad range of ability at tryouts (which were 100% scrimmage). Some kids were really impressive. DS was surprised he made it, but I thought he did well. He’s not a flashy player, but is strong, with good field vision, and loves defending. I suspect that last bit helped since most others were angling to play offense.
PP Above here, Ok that is about the level I was thinking would be likely to make it, so thanks for that info. I think coaches love a player with good field vision and good defending skills...those are solid qualities. Thanks for info about tryout. I may watch a training session some Saturday evening just to decide for myself if we want to get into it. Every time we did a supplemental program, my DD learned a lot from the program that her own club never works on. Hoping that is the case for this program. -Cheers to your son!
