The tone is set by the president. Other presidents like Obama may have been tough on migrants as well, but we didn't hear as much about it because it wasn't the centerpiece of his campaign as it is with Trump. As long as Trump feeds the immigrants-are-criminals and immigrants-are-taking-over-our -country narrative and stoking tensions with made-for-TV footage like Alligator Alcatraz, ICE Barbie photo-ops at CECOT, Stephen Miller and Tom Homan angrily yelling about "illegals," using the military in ICE enforcement, and awarding ICE and the BP a budget that rivals the military budget of entire countries, divisions between Americans will continue and the flames of discord will be fanned. The whole thing needs to be taken down a few notches. By all means, take the criminal migrants--but stop treating everyone else as criminals and looking for excuses to get rid of mostly people of color without due process and without care for their legal and human rights.
