The problem is that the collegiate sports industrial complex has gotten out of control. At the major power school level all of the NIL has gotten ridiculous. I think it is horrible but I kind of get it as the big sports also generate a ton of money.

What I don't get is how far smaller schools that are generating $0 from sports have shifted to prioritize athlete admits. Coaches at these schools still have a lot of pressure to win to keep their jobs so have succeeded in getting the ears of admissions people and getting priority admissions. The whole early application process for these athletes is crazy. As you noted, I know several NESCAC athletes who had a totally different process. Generally very smart kids who had a decent chance of getting in anyway, but the fact that they knew months ahead of time because they were athletes is crazy. And the amount that these parents are spending on sending their kids to various "showcases" to be seen by these schools is also nuts - not blaming the parents for this as they are just playing the game and trying to do what is best for their kid.

But who on earth truly cares about field hockey at Bates or baseball at Amherst or whatever else? The schools jump through crazy hoops to help these teams then there are 12 people at the games.[/quote]
