Anyone who has been involved in youth sports has seen some pretty crappy parent behavior over the years. That said, when you witness it at a school where you are considering sending your child, it makes a bigger impact regardless of whether or not that parent's behavior reflects that of the greater community. We had a really negative experience at Landon (multiple parents were involved), and while I don't doubt that could have happened at Bullis or Prep or wherever, it happened at Landon so that's stuck with us. We did apply and considered Landon seriously, but that incident caused us to look a little more closely/carefully at the culture of the school than we might have otherwise.
Your DC most obviously was never involved in youth or travel sports because parents at those games are 10 TIMES WORSE than the Landon parents. I'm tired of people who obviously never applied to Landon yet continue to share untruths about the school, the parental culture and the students which isn't true. Parents within most of these circles cheer their kids/school on, but are rarely obnoxious. Collectively, my kids have been involved with private school sports (Big 3) and youth/travel programs for over 6 years now and we never encountered this.
Wow. I simply said we witnessed unsavory parent behavior at a Landon sports event (we were there watching older DS who attends another school) which was a data point that stuck with us during the application process. I’m sorry you don’t believe that. Maybe it was a one in a million anomaly that we happened to see. FWIW—We did still apply for younger DS (and he was accepted), but ultimately decided to send DS elsewhere.
