I'm on Tiktok where there are always videos from angry Canadians ranting about the tarriffs, how theyve cancelled their vacation and are only buying Canadian, etc. Which... totally fine and understandable. But what's crazy to me is this very xenophobic anger towards random American people, just spewing utterly hateful stuff. I'm not sure what the end goal is here, maybe it's just a form of venting and they dont mean it but frankly it comes off deranged. I dont think the average American feels the same kind of deep seated animosity towards Canadians (or any particular country, for that matter). Has anyone seen this?
Sooooo… Americans are allowed to be xenophobic, transphobic, homophobic, gun toting bullies who voted in a rapist criminal, but Canadians are not allowed to have any feels that their leader *that they voted for* is coming for them? Americans DO have this animosity towards Canadians if they’re not standing up for us, our integrity, and our soverignty. Seriously? In the most Canadian terms I can muster - Yeah, no, F off eh? Elbows up.
I'm a Canadian who loves the United States. Spent all of my vacations there until I left home at eighteen to go to college in the US, where I majored in American history and minored in American literature. Even interned on Capitol Hill. Much of my family is American. Some of my favourite cities in the world are in the US. Hell, if this was happening thirty years ago, I'd probably be stoked to become an American. But many of even the most worldly, educated liberal Americans have this strange myopia toward the rest of the world that no one else has. I suppose it comes from being socialized in such a large and powerful country where most of the world's entertainment originates. I can't adequately describe it, but maybe another non-American who knows what I mean can.
I think much of that comes from geographic isolation. A lot of countries have been dealing with multiple neighbors for centuries whether they like it or not. The US has the luxury of wealth and distance and can afford to not be too concerned with others. That’s changing though, and the upheaval currently in progress will sap much of the country’s strength and influence.
