I’m a traditional conservative. We’re the never-Trumpers who voted straight Democratic (anti-MAGA) tickets, despite the fact that we disagreed on many issues and despite the fact that Democrats seemed more interested in demonizing us for being so evil as to disagree with them, than they were in having our votes. Now I’m mourning what I fear is the loss of my country. I think our freedom is gone, we just haven’t realized it yet. Our actions with Ukraine were shameful. We have surrendered our position as world leader of “the good guys” who support freedom to join the ranks of “the bad guys”, oppressive, aggressive dictators - so much for “truth, justice, and the American way”. I’ll continue writing to my representative and senators, but since I live in a blue state, they’re already opposing Trump. I expect to be protesting in the future, but at best, I expect that to be ineffective, and may eventually have much worse outcomes. If, by some miracle, we ever get another meaningful election, I’ll be voting Democratic, but it would be helpful if Democrats would stop calling would-be voters ignorant and/or evil. Not liking abortion, DEI, thinking illegal immigration should be controlled, or that the trans agenda may have gone too far, too fast, doesn’t make someone sexist, racist, or transphobic, but even if someone is all of the above, and more, we need their vote. Likewise, stop treating voters like idiots. The country was crying out to you about inflation, which you dismissed, claiming it didn’t exist, expecting that since Dems were more likely to be college educated than Republicans (something that was continually being referenced), they should accept the “experts” claims that inflation didn’t exist over their own experiences at the store. What was the biggest economic concern according to the Democrats? Paying off student debt was the real crisis, those same college-educated experts would explain. Meanwhile, they told the hoi palloi that they were on their side fighting for DEI, abortion, trans rights, etc, and wondered why so many people stupidly voted against what you kept telling them was in their own interest. Instead of listening to what they said they needed, you told them you knew better and were baffled that they disagreed. Trump, for all his many faults, listened. He said he agreed that inflation was a problem and that he would fix it. Now I agree that Trump is a liar who isn’t competent to fix inflation, and even if he could, might not bother. Nonetheless, however incompetent and/or unmotivated he might be to fix a problem, he’s still a step ahead of those who won’t even acknowledge the problem exists. Where are the traditional conservatives? We’re still here, fighting MAGA every way we can. Are the Democrats finally desperate enough to put politics aside and join us? Elissa Slotkin’s response to Trump’s speech was fantastic. It focused on the values that unite us and addressed our common interests, rather than seeking to divide us. That’s the message America has been waiting to hear.
