I went through a phase of waxing in my mid to late 20s because I felt like I "had" to -- there was peer pressure to do it and I definitely go the message that it was somehow unclean or gross to have a bush. This was also the era when everyone acted like you had to wear thong underwear (and that VPL was some horrible faux pas) and back when bathing suits were supposed to be as skimpy as possible. Not coincidentally, this was also probably the lowest my self-esteem has ever been regarding my body. And for reference, I'm a naturally thin woman who at the time wore a size 0 or even 00 even without dieting at all.

I am so glad that in the last 20 years, we've made great progress on being more inclusive and empowering about women's beauty standards. On size but also on things like how women dress (you can wear revealing clothes or not and still be fashionable, for instance, no one polices what kind of underwear you wear) and the kinds of maintenance we do (not just waxing/shaving but also makeup, gray hair, how tan you are, etc. -- all of which were closely policed in the 00s in a way that was so shaming and abusive).
