Chickens make a lot of poop, it's quite disgusting and that is why there are minimum yard size requirements of over 2 acres for each
There aren't, though. Not even in Fairfax County.
In Fairfax County you cannot have chickens on less than 2 acres, even as pets, unless you live in a locality that allows it (like Fairfax City) or are grandfathered, or go through the permit process with public hearing. I'm aware some people just have them anyway, but 2 acres is the rule in that county.
It's not 2 acres per chicken. And the rule has two options: (1) 2+ acres (2) < 2 acres plus permit
You're correct. I missed that PP said "for each," that's not right. The permit involves a newspaper advertisement, notifying your neighbors, and a public hearing and zoning board vote. Which is fine! But it's more than, say, a building permit. Personally I think a limited number of poultry (like 6 hens?) should be allowed on any lot so long as you have setbacks from the neighbors. If your lot is too small or your house is too big, you wouldn't meet setback requirements. But requiring 2 acres for even a small number of chickens or ducks is overkill. There are public parks with more birds in less space.
