White flight. Like a PP said, demographics have shifted in MoCo and while they used to flee to the DC and Bethesda privates, they now have other options. More demand during the pandemic allowed all of these private schools to seem more selective because they had more applicants to choose from! So every school seems like they have higher standards for admission than they did before.
Kinda. I’m not sure you can call it “white flight” given the diversity of applicants desperately trying to avoid MCPS high schools. I think it has more to do with parents of all races struggling to get their kids into a better environment. While they had 1k applicants for 300 seats last year, I suspect they will have over 1,200 this year. I graduated from an area private a million years ago and GC was known as a public school with tuition. It was a jab at the school’s students as well as the lack of academic rigor. That was both before and after it went co-ed like SJC. For whatever reason, it has become ridiculously “popular.” I think a lot of it has to do with kids and parents wanting a neighborhood/suburban school without a DC commute. I bet someone could make a fortune opening up another suburban private high school.
Just back from taking a kid for their interview at GC. Characterizing the current popularity of the school as at all a product of “white flight” is wildly inaccurate. The diversity of both the kids interviewing and the honors society kids volunteering today was stunning and has no parallel at DC schools or GCP. I am not a fan of the school overall, but some of the caricature of the place being used to demean it has no basis in reality.
With all respect, it is a 30k school: If you don’t like it find somewhere else for your kid, why did you go forward with the interview then?
