America needs more STEM grads, innovators and tech workers. We should be investing in our people to pursue those paths.
I went to school in West Africa and I came to study engineering physics..I went to a Top 10 public university. In HS I learned calculus 1,2,3 and physics I and II and chemistry I and II. And I wasn't even in a gifted or advanced program. I was in a standard scientific program. In the United States access to a similar program is reserved for the brightest kids. In my opinion this is problematic. And the solutions being proposed are even worse. For example California bizarrely waived pre-calc as a prereq to calculus at one of its community college. The approach to STEM needs to be looked at further . But I stead of focusing on first principles we are teaching kids statistics and data science in middle/HS. This is also a bad approach because we are training kids to be ready for Corporate America instead of training them to solve hard theoretical problem.
