Is your daughter a URM who talked about her identity in her essays and someone who goes to an underperforming high school? W&M likes good test takers. Unless the above two things were true, absolutely not. Maybe a waitlist with the thing like Northeastern's NU-In program would've been possible but definitely not an admit.[/quote]

No, not an URM. Although both of her parents rose above their decidedly blue collar backgrounds. And not the best high school in Fairfax County, but also not an underperforming high school. Naviance has her looking like UVA was a definite no, WM was a probable no, VT looks possible but no sure thing, and everything else public in state looks promising, fingers crossed.[/quote]

Me too, though her counselor advised her to make sure she applied EA to VT to make sure she had the best shot.

She's also thinking there's no way she'd get in RD to W&M (and she prefers JMU anyway) so she shouldn't bother applying RD to W&M. Part of me agrees with her but part of me says she should at least try for W&M.[/quote]

This was my thought.
Your DD is literally telling you “I prefer this school that I am near-certain to get into…and even if the harder-to-get-into school accepts me, I want to go to this other school!”
And you’re like “we’ll just apply to see what happens!”
Why? 
So that she can feel sh!tty about being rejected by W&M?
So that she can feel “proud” about being accepted by W&M even though she doesn’t want to attend?
So YOU will feel proud of her for being accepted to W&M and will be able to brag about it even though she isn’t choosing it? (Or will you try ti talk her into attending bc it’s a ‘better” school? Newsflash PP, it isn’t better for your DD if she doesn’t want to be there!)
Also keep in mind that if she already knows for sure she doesn’t want to go there, then it’s a wasted acceptance that the school could have given to someone else who really wants it.[/quote]
