Its fascinating to me how angry the pro-phone group is. They are claiming everyone who wants phones out of schools are MAGA or whatever. First off, we are a very liberal family, and we are 100% with no phones in school. I still haven't heard why kids need their phones in school, just screeds about how its punishment not to have them or why we can't police our own kids. That's the thing. We can police our own kids, mine are very mindful of the phone (i screentime them and see their usage during the day) -- but half the kids in the school are checked out on their phone, and it makes it so you have to go on your phone or you look like some weirdo trying to make friends IRL. How quaint. Its a culture now where everyone is ignoring each other and on their phones, to do otherwise flirts with social catastrophe. If we are letting kids have phones all day in school, why not let them have Nintendos, DVD players, lego sets, or whatever. Everything has a time and place, and school is for focused learning -- and the attention stealing of a phone, which has been shown to be more enthralling then using a laptop, needs to be halted. One thing of note, all the top private schools have been banning phones to a much larger degree, often all day long. And they have a much easier time monitoring in class violations because of much smaller classes and the real threat of expulsion -- and yet they still do widespread bans. They know their students performance will drop if they let them become 'zombies' and that is their top priority.
I also think it’s funny how no phones is now being considered some MAGA. I always associate no phones/low tech with the liberal , granola type parents
It is only because on this forum, people wrongfully associate APE with being right leaning or conservative, and APE has publicly indicated support for reasonable cell phone restrictions in schools. The posters on this forum who malign political orientation with certain subject matter areas do so in a way that is narrow minded and uninformed, but, they will scream it through their caps locked keyboard til the cows come home. We are a left leaning family politically, supported kids getting back in school sooner than APS facilitated their return, and are 100% interested in a bell to bell ban. Oh, and the grandmas on both sides of their families were public school employees to boot--has anyone's head exploded yet? I guess DCUM can only operate in ways that narrowly confines and stereotypes people according to if they do or do not agree with that poster's own individual value system. In sum, it is dumb.
I’m not assuming anything. APE leadership are employed by RWNJs. They proudly voted for Youngkin and bragged about it loudly. They just don’t say the dog whistles out loud at the moment.
