Because nobody else can put up satellites for defense, communication or put up rockets to supply the space station. Oh, right the Russians can and the Chinese just landed on the moon (and landed a booster rocket back on earth this week). You gonna rely on Boeing?? Good luck. We should be happy that Elon got busy with the rocket business. Without him lots of spy satellites would be sitting on the ground. Unless we could get the Chinese or Russians to put them up.

Who cares about his personality. He gets things done. He started EVs. Who else was going to do that? Now they all want to use his superchargers. Look, you might not like the guy, but he didn't get to where he is by doing nothing.
