What is their financial situation like? The coming decade is going to be rough for small colleges in areas that are losing population.
I think the coming decade is going to be rough for a lot of the regional universities (private and public) and specialty schools (e.g., art institutes, culinary schools, Catholic schools that aren't among the 'big names'). I don't think we have evidence it's going to be rough for national liberal arts colleges--especially not those ranked in the top 100 like Juniata. Some have had belt-tightening (just like many other types of colleges/universities), but so far all that have experienced some financial pressure, quickly right the boat. I think one of their strengths is that their educational model isn't built on growth--rather it's built on sustaining. Some larger universities with grad programs etc. need to keep growing enrollment, keep expanding program, keep building out the research and tech budget. But these undergraduate small institutions just need to keep their operations going. I'm not saying it's going to be all smooth sailing for them or anything, but I don't think they are the most threatened part of higher ed.
