Unfortunately, the UC system will remain a perplexing lottery system until standardized testing returns as part of their calculus, but for now:

3.85 - 3.88 unweighted / 4.38 - 4.42 weighted / capped, weighted UC GPA was on the low end for UCLA - I think ~ 4.12 (grade 10 - 11)
14 AP classes (score of 5 on all AP tests taken through last May)
6 honors classes (but only one is UC weighted)
1600 SAT (test blind, so that didn't factor into it)
4-year varsity team sport, CIF champion, team captain
Multiple research ECs that perfectly align with lived experiences and intended major
Multiple school club ECS (1-2 with leadership roles) that mostly align with intended major
Multiple volunteer ECs
PIQs were pretty good

At the end of the day, there's little rhyme or reason that I can see in the UC decisions. It's truly a lottery, at least from my perspective. It's also a risky strategy to "lock on" to a particular UC in the first tier (Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD) when those schools are receiving around 400,000 applications for maybe 20,000 freshman seats. There are actually quite a few decisions yet to arrive, but I expect the vast majority to be unfavorable. However, yes - at this point, there are a few (e.g., a few of the Ivy League variety, Berkeley, and a Top 10 private or two) that would get his attention enough to at least have a conversation. Intended major happens to be unusually highly ranked across most of the Top 25 schools, so the net was cast very wide. If a conversation comes to pass, and excluding Berkeley for the moment, I would expect that such a conversation would center around the Goldilocks aspects of a UCLA college experience vs. the raw potential of life after a college experience in a Top 10 private environment.[/quote]
