I sometimes think it was kinder that Diana did not live to see all this.
Not for her sons and grandchildren! Diana would have still been a force in the monarch as mother/grandmother to heirs of the throne. Imagine how things would have played out for Meghan & Kate to have Diana as their MIL. So sad she missed out on happier decades to come.
Kate and Diana would have been at each others throats. Or actually, I don't think Kate would have married Will.
I don’t think Will or Kate would be any different if Diana had lived. Will is pretty much exactly what he was destined to be and Kate I was the only sensible choice for him. Who knows about Harry but as second son he was probably always destined for some level of conflict and disappointment. I feel like Diana would be in for the drama though. She definitely had an element of sh-t stirrer about her. This is not from the TV show — this is from my following her in the press at the time. She had such a love hate relationship with the public attention. The one thing that would be different is that Camilla definitely would not be queen.
DP. I think Diana would’ve wanted William to marry an aristo.
Hard to say. This type of arrangement is what led to her lousy marriage. She may have realized that marrying outside of that and actually loving/respecting your spouse is more important. However, if she were still alive, I’m not sure the royal family would have modernized those rules. I think her death and the aftermath is what led to the relaxing of the rules which directly led to Kate and Meg
I think this is probably true. Had Diana lived, everything would be different. In many ways her death paved the way for Charles to marry Camilla, because it would have been harder for the remarriage to get approval if the mother of the heir were still alive. On the other hand, I also think if Diana had lived, her public reputation would be more complicated (and less favorable) because it wouldn't be frozen in time. I think Harry and William would be less traumatized and screwed up, but they'd also have to manage divorced parents within their already weird and screwed up family, so I don't think it would just be smooth sailing. I do think Diana would still have a significant role in the family that would change a lot of dynamics, simply as mother to the heir. Think of Diana's involvement in William's and Harry's weddings, and the birth of their kids. With Diana dead, it was QEII's presence, approval, and involvement that was viewed as most significant. But Diana was as famous as QEII -- people would have been obsessed with her relationship with the DILs and with the boys' kids. It would just change everything. It's "cleaner" for the family, and better for Charles and Camilla specifically, that Diana is dead. Obviously worse for her sons and their families. Everything would be different if she was still alive.
+1 to this. Things in the monarchy would have remained more formal. William might not have been allowed to date or marry Kate.
