Anyway, I have lived in a few big cities where there are many ethnic minorities and I will say that although nothing has ever happened to me personally, I have noticed that more AA/blacks in DC are openly hostile towards Asians than any other major city I have lived in. In some cities, there are many black/Asian couples (usually black male, Asian woman) but I haven't seen many (if any) in DC. So the hostility/ tension is not a big city phenomenon. It is DC.

But OP - I think the group you encountered were just being bullies and wanted to intimidate you because they assumed (correctly) that you wouldn't speak up. if you were an Asian woman, I doubt this would have happened to you. I think you could have been a short skinny wimpy nerdy-looking white guy and this group of AA males might have spit on your car. I am going to guess that if you were a 6'2" Asian beefcake, they probably wouldn't have tried to intimidate you.

If the above rings true for you, then I would work on developing a more confident stride, get some muscles, a few tattoos, and look like someone no one would dare mess with.

And I'm sorry this happened to you. I would be horrified myself.
