I did the same my freshman year (though with a 3.3) and it was the best thing ever for me. My grades rocketed up after freshman year, I got into a great grad program, great career etc. All good. My advice - back the heck off your kid this semester. Truly. It’s inappropriate to try to be so involved in your college freshman’s choices, especially when he’s clearly doing just fine.
