I think it’s mostly a trend and less about feeling free to experiment. I am a heterosexual, feminine, type adult woman, who was a doll playing, dress wearing girly girl, but I could totally see the young teen me thinking I might be transgender. I remember not feeling womanly or sexual and not wanting my body to change and not wanting to wear make up or bras and wishing I were a boy so I wouldn’t bleed. Luckily for me, in my day, bulimia and anorexia were the ways that neurotic girls dealt with their bodily insecurities and neither one of those was remotely appealing to me. I could easily see the teen me thinking, “that’s it! I’m a boy!” I don’t think I liked my body until I was around 20 (and I have an objectively nice figure).

You’re not alone. It’s just that often these thoughts get stifled and criticized.

Like you, I hated girly stuff as a young girl. I could’ve [i]easily[/i] been caught up in the trends of today.
