I don't think most people here truly understand how time consuming it is to coach at the high school level. For terrible pay. And potentially a target of nonstop criticism. Now... who wants the job?
Not to mention dealing with parents who have never played the sport trying to “help” you coach the team. The parents who think their kid deserves more playing time. That their kid should be on varsity when they were on the fence on being cut from JV. Parents that have the AD on speed dial. The parents that think their kid is going to be recruited by Duke/ UNC/ Harvard and he/ she can’t even pick up a GB. You know what the worst thing about coaching is, the @$&#in’ parents.
And the same goes for the referees. Kids are great; coaches are great; parents are horrible and causing the shortage in referees.
I had to stop coaching my daughters rec. teams after a few years because of the parents. I played D1 Men's Lacrosse back in the day so I know a little about the game. Numerous Moms coming up to me asking why their daughters weren't playing as much (couldn't run 10 yards without a water break) or why I wasn't running a certain offense their older daughter runs in high school. These girls couldn't even catch and throw so my focus was on fundamentals - not a 2-3-2 offense with picks and cutters. Heck, just getting the goalies gear on was a full time job. It's a shame because there was a lot of knowledge I could've passed down to the girls. Both of my girls are on very good tracks so it all worked out, but I could've stayed in longer and passed on more knowledge without the constant parent interaction. Oh well....
