Things stupid teenagers do: ring doorbells and run away. Stealing a car and killing a man is sociopathic, and has nothing to do with "not fully formed frontal lobe."
DP. I could even allow stuff such as throwing rocks off of bridges or buildings as maybe falling into the things stupid teens do category (I assume some of them fully understand the potential consequences, but I could also be persuaded that lots of teens are too dumb to realize you can kill people doing that…) But this is just premeditated murder.
I think what is so scary is that this case isn’t in the gray area of where we need to weigh the defendant’s age vs. culpability. This wasn’t a good kid who stupidly decided to punch someone one time, which accidentally killed the person. Those cases are much harder all around. But this is such an obvious example of why we allow minors to be tried as adults, that it truly scares me that people purporting to work with criminal youths are making excuses. If this doesn’t rise to the level of “we need to get this person off the streets immediately to protect others,” then what exactly has to happen for a 17 year old to be deemed a danger?
They have an agenda and public safety ain't it.
