NP and I do find this interesting, though I am Hindu. But I think what most of the Muslim posters on this forum have been saying on this thread really resonates with me (and I am guessing a lot of Asians in general). There are subcultures within the Democratic party that vote the way we do because long ago we agreed on certain policies: Lower taxes for the middle class, healthcare for all, investment in public education, gun control, climate change. Many of us are high earners and would fare better (financially with lower taxes) if we voted Republican. But we don't, because there is this sense of improving the public good is more important in the long run. But that sense is definitely being eroded by the decisions progressives are making. I think Democrats are at risk of losing Muslims and Hindus if you keep pushing the trans/gender identity issues to the forefront of their agenda. I myself am very liberal, but I know enough of my relatives/friends to understand that progressives need to be *practical*, and focus on the issues that impact the most number of people - and that's NOT LGBTQ issues. My friends/relatives want the party to push better health coverage, improve public education, ban guns, and invest in the green economy, first and foremost. And if you push other things (introducing a queer friendly curriculum in elem, expanding abortion in the 2nd trimester for minors, etc), you are just going to continue to lose them. Just my two cents.
I am one of the Muslim posters and you sound exactly like me. I vote democrat because I believe in unions, Medicare for all, public education, gun control, diplomacy and not war and combating climate change. My husband and I are also high earners so technically lower taxes are better for us. But we vote democrat because we believe that the public good is more important. However democrats seem to not care about any of this anymore and are more focused on controversial culture war issues. I have friends who have registered republican. I think that democrats will lose a lot of religious and ethnic minority voters and immigrants to the republicans. Democrats have decided to put all their eggs in the lgbtqia+ basket and to die on that hill. They will lose many of us in the process. I personally can never vote republican but will never vote democrat again. I guess I will just not vote at all.
