The issue is that his income is, on paper, a very good HHI, but in reality it simply means he lives a decently comfortable life. Judging from this thread, it seems that is main "luxury" is being able to max out his retirement benefits and that is where the surplus money is going. The irony is that we're supposed to be responsible and max out our retirements, yet apparently in doing so we're also criticized for not checking our privilege when we also wonder why we aren't having a lavish lifestyle people assume you get with a higher HHI.
