When my daughter was a 17 yr old senior in HS she was invited to a NYE party at a friend's house. I called the friend's dad (single parent) and said I just wanted to make sure alcohol wasn't going to be permitted for the kids and he assured me there was no way the kids would be drinking at his house. A few years later my daughter told me that not only were all the kids drinking and the dad provided it but that she was smoking pot with one of the dad's friends that night. Not sure what you are supposed to do about that as a parent other than never let your kids go anywhere.
I’m 50. When I was in HS, my parents called the host parents any time I was going anywhere that could be considered a party. My parents were well known to be the strictest, but I didn’t realize how much of an outlier they were until I overheard other parents making fun of them for calling. At the time, I wanted to die of embarrassment, but as an adult, I seriously wonder WTF was wrong with those parents. My oldest is only in middle school and I really dread this aspect of HS (and later MS, depending on the crowd).
