They were in an LSV which is slightly different than a golf cart. A golf cart goes 15 mph. An LSV can go 25 mph or more, has headlights, turn signals, mirrors, seat belts.
“There are two main things that distinguish a golf cart from a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV), sometimes referred to as a Low-Speed Vehicle or LSV: - The maximum speed of a golf cart is 15mph. - An NEV / LSV must go 25mph or more. - An NEV has headlights, turn signals, mirrors, seat belts, and even a VIN number. - An NEV / LSV can be operated on streets with a posted speed limit of 35mph or less.” See https://www.tmhnc.com/blog/buying-a-street-legal-golf-cart-nev-lsv#:~:text=There%20are%20two%20main%20things,and%20even%20a%20VIN%20number
Gas powered golf carts can go very fast, for the record.
Not really. I live in a town with lots of street legal golf carts that are (illegally) driven on main roads with speed limits up to 50 mph and have been stuck behind them many times as they tootle along at 20-25 mph.
