Seinfeld's main cast were selfish characters. The storylines were increasingly unrealistic. The laughs were goofy. And yet it rose above this formula and became a hit. Friends had earnest characters, more relationship-based stories, lots of dumb running jokes. But it also rose above the formula and became a hit. Really they are more similar than not. I would agree Seinfeld was more clever because it was more creative and didn't lean on the same relationship tropes over and over.
