We are consciously a pet-free house. My spouse and I were traveling a lot for work and we both realized that our life would be a lot more stressful with a pet. Well now we have kids and pets would just be a big complication to our lives. We have a small enough house in an urban area. The amount of time and money our friends spend on their pets just blows my mind. Every vacation is 50% more expensive because they need to hire a pet sitter or put the animal into boarding, if they can find someone or a spot. My friend has to drive her dog to her parents’ house in NJ every time she wants to do a proper vacation. I really don’t see the point. Maybe we will get a cat one day, they at least groom themselves.
If you view a pet as a "stressful complication" then yes I see why you wouldn't want one. But no need to pretend its about money. Our beloved dog is neither stressful, nor expensive.
Not expensive until it gets sick or injured and you have to pay a huge vet bill. pet ownership isn't free. There are always vet bills, food, pet sitting (unless you have someone to watch your dog for free or never travel), the stress of being on the clock to get home because you need to walk the dog. We are also pet free by choice and whenever my friends talk about their pet expenses am thankful we never got a dog.
Costs way less than a fancy car or kitchen and brings so much joy. "For those who understand, no explanation is required. For those who don't, no explanation will suffice."
Why do pet people get so offended and think everyone needs and should want a pet? You like your dog, it brings you joy and you find the expense worthwhile. That is great! We all find joy in different place and I'd rather spend my money other ways. I have kids. I love my kids. They bring me great joy and I find them worth the expense. But I can also 100% understand why some people do not want kids and choose not to have them. "You can't miss what you never wanted"
Because people aren't telling you that your kids are a waste of your time and money. Neither my kids nor my dog are a waste of my time or money. I like my dog better than most people.
But I am not telling you they are a waste of time or money. Just simply stating that I do not chose to spend my time or money on pets. The whole point of this post is thing you would personally never spend money on. I am sure there are people who are childless by choice who would definitely say that for them kids are a waste of time and money. We all chose how we spend our money differently based on what give us joy and what we value. I'd love a new kitchen, but I would never be willing to put my travel budget towards a new kitchen. I am also not willing to take from my travel fund to have a dog. In my world travel and expensive activities like skiing give me more joy that a dog.
