Other than that, what the PPs are referencing is the benefit of geographic diversity, no school wants to have only students from high performing areas. The DMV is extra competitive. It is easier to stand out as compared to your peers when your community is not the crazy DMV, or NYC, or Palo Alto. Was speaking recently with a cousin who studied engineering at Duke, she graduated 5 years ago. She came from a highly competitive west coast public school and said she was well prepared but that some of her peers from smaller communities were not as well prepared by their high schools.[/quote]
