Endowment is, arguably, the single most important factor when ranking colleges & universities.
Nonsense. Many of the great publics schools in this country don’t have huge endowments. People seem to forget that large state appropriations are equivalent to billions of dollars in private school endowment.
LOL Place the US News rankings next to a list of schools ranked by endowment. (Univ. of Texas system and Texas A&M endowments cover many universities within each system).
That isn't true. It primarily benefits the flagship campus.
That's not true. UTAs endowment is under 5 billion.
UT Austin's endowment is different in that there is a state endowment and a private endowment. The state endowment comes from income from lands in West Texas set aside in the state constitution. For the University of Texas, only UT Austin receives a guaranteed percentage of funds for "excellence", which contributes $439M to the UT Austin budget for FY22. This is about the same as the contribution of endowment income to the UM Ann Arbor budget for FY22, $434M. In addition, UT Austin also has a private endowment of funds that were raised separately, which is currently $5.7B. Additional state endowment funds also pay off bonds used for construction.
What is being reported in 4.3 billion.
It is an institution with a unique setup, but since it is public, everything is online. The current private endowment is $5.7B https://www.utimco.org/reports/private-endowments/ The public endowment, the Permanent University Fund, is currently about $32B and is split 2/3rd ($21.3B) to 1/3rd ($10.7B) between the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M System respectively. Of the UT System part, UT Austin gets the payout to support programs from over 50% of this total and can get no less than 45%. So that is currently about $10.7B. This excludes additional PUF funds that are allocated to pay for debt service on UT Austin construction bonds. https://www.utsystem.edu/sites/default/files/documents/report-state/2021/available-university-fund-report-fy-2021/fy-2021-ut-system-auf-report.pdf www.utimco.org
