I'm probably the odd man out on this, but I'd rather see my child's teacher (who is triple vaxxed like every other staff member in the building) go maskless indoors than my own unvaccinated 4 year old. He's been wearing a mask indoors since he was 2...it's the same as socks and shoes to him. But it would be great for him to be able to see the formation of her mouth to form sounds during Phonics, hear clear unmuffled directions, and maybe even see a smile or two for the first time!
Given how little your 4 year old's mask does to protect him, don't you want him to see his friends' faces as well? Don't you think that might add a joy and enrichment to his life that he sadly so far hasn't known?
Friends' smiles are nice and fortunately he sees those smiles outside. Wouldn't quite be accurate though to say an entire class of unvaxxed 4 year olds wearing N95s are receiving no protection in doing so. But that's why I essentially said I was probably alone in my thought that I currently prioritize the academic benefits of having an unmasked teacher over seeing 4 year old smiles.
You are putting a tightly fitted N95 on your 4 year old? And the other parents are doing the same? Have you ever looked at the statistics of the risk Covid poses to your little kid?
Yes, the whole class wears N95s and somehow we all have to remind our kids to take them off as we go home. I wish I was that comfortable in one. But I went 30+ years not wearing a mask inside so its a little different from my child who has no memories of life before one. I continue to remind you that I'm talking about my prioritization of next steps, but you seem to want to make it a "this or that" instead of a "this, then that" for some reason.
I am ignoring your prioritization because there is no scenario in which DC will allow teachers to unmask but not children, so it's really a moot point. And I find it odd that you seem to think it's ok to put N95s on preschoolers. I also don't think it's actually happening, because N95s don't exist in that size. You are probably talking about KN95s and KF94s, and I think you are overestimating the protection these offer, since they are not actually as tightly fitted as an N95, which is a structural mask that has straps that go around the head to provide the tight air seal that is needed to get the filtration they promise. With the other masks, as worn by the average preschooler, most of the air goes around the edges, and all they provide is the illusion of safety parents crave. But if you are so confident that they work, why would you be opposed to making their use optional now? One-way masking works if done correctly.
